Every year I receive a summary of HiWork's email usage for the previous year. In 2016 we sent 5,705 emails and received 9,013. That's almost 15,000 emails processed over the course of 525,600 minutes.

Although I'm sure other people have more, that's still a lot of email. More importantly, that's a lot of time spent reading and writing email. Time, as I've mentioned before, time is the most precious of limited resources. This is especially true in a small office environment where every minute reading or writing an email is a minute spent doing something other than design. Then again it is an important tool for communicating with clients, contractors and consultants. It's hard to imagine how we did our jobs before email and yet at times it seems like our job would be easier without it. There are days where it seems like all I do is email.

This year I'm trying to do a better job of not checking my email so often. I still have to respond to everything, but I try to only do it at three designated times during the day. Although it's tempting to do so, I've turned off notifications to avoid the temptation to check it more often. We'll see how that goes.

I'll send you an email about it.
